  • the shakers - The Shakers Music Videos from 1983
In 1983, The Shakers were one of the most popular and successful New Wave bands in the Albuquerque bar scene. Members included Nancy Howell (lead vocals), G. Douglas Pierson (guitar), Kevin Hughes (keyboards and guitars), Eric Benjamin (bass), and Dennis Painter (drums). The band, which played New Wave covers mixed in with all original dance-friendly tunes, enjoyed a huge following of night clubbers who favored high energy rock and pop in an era of The Cars, Thomas Dolby, The Pretenders, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Jackson, and Men at Work. The music video for Don't Talk About Love was obviously made on a shoestring budget, but the essence of the band's sound, Nancy and Eric's always entertaining stage presence, and the exciting arrangements are all evident in this 1983 clip. The video was filmed at the now defunct, but Nationally known super hotel, The Western Skies. Keyboardist Kevin Hughes wrote the song and directed the video. Wild man Eric Benjamin passed away unexpectedly in 2011, but is remembered fondly by his bandmates as one of the reasons the band was so successful, along with Nancy's phenomenal voice and delivery.

    1) Prayer Universal 2) More Love 3) Sweet Summerland Emily Browder, soprano/The New England Voices conducted by Malcolm Halliday Featured: Scenes from the Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Photography by Maris Kristapsons from Albany TROY988 (2007) www.albanyrecords.com The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, called the Shakers, came to the New World in 1774. Ann Lee Standerin, called Mother Ann by her followers, traveled to America with seven disciples to establish the Shaker religion in the New World. The group was so named because of fervent prayer rituals in which they entered into trance-like states — twitching, shaking, whirling, singing and dancing, seeking transcendence from the burdens of sin. A gentle, highly ethical people there were, at the height of the movement in 1850, 6000 Shakers, a number that began to decline after industrialization took over. Because the Shakers believed the human voice to be the perfect instrument for the expression to God, they were prolific composers. It is said that there are over 10000 hymns in existence. This unique disc presents both original hymns and modern American works based on the materials. Fittingly, the first of these is one that is beloved by many Aaron Copland's setting of Simple Gifts. 37 Selections, including original hymns and works based on Shaker hymns by Aaron Copland, William Cutter, Eric Sawyer and Jacob Druckman
